Jennifer West is a prominent Seattle area artist who uses projected digital media in her innovative and visceral art installations. Coils / Episode 4 Skin So Thick, is the fourth installment in a body of work that waffles between seduction and repulsion. Five richly colored video projections pulsate in 911s five large storefront windows to create a strangely mesmerizing multimedia experience. In fleshy red landscapes, subterranean burrowers struggle to emerge, perhaps a testament to the poignancy of all strained endeavors. This colony of micro-Slinkies pierces through a dark surface that makes the mind rethink a Mars landing with a sense of doomed eroticism.
Jennifer West is curator of video art at Commencement Art Gallery in Tacoma, and is a visiting artist at Cornish College for the Arts and Evergreen State College. Her videos, films, and multi-media art installations have been exhibited internationally.
Ongoing since 1984, 911 Media Arts Centers Windows exhibition program continues to offer area artists a unique installation opportunity in five large storefront windows facing a major intersection at 117 Yale Avenue North (one block south of the flagship REI building). 911 Windows is supported in part through a grant from PONCHO. Artists interested in applying to the program should contact Brad Thompson at 911 Media Arts Center (206) 682-6552, or e-mail brad@911media.org.
