911 Media arts Center presents The Bible Cycle, a site-specific sculptural installation by artist Brad Miller, on view from May 13 through June 6, 1999. An opening reception for the artist will be held Thursday, May 132, 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The installation hangs in three of 911s storefront windows; the bindings of three books have been cut off and their loose pages hang on large circular armatures. The books are The Bible, an issue of TV Guide, and the Starr Report.
This project considers 911s role in media education and creative alternatives to mainstream media. The Bible Cycle addresses how the media champions and as a result sanctifies certain issues. As many have observed, the medium is the message. Putting something in print and repeating it in the media lends veracity and importance to any subject.
Miller describes his installations collectively as "spatial puzzles". He creates art by discovering unconventional uses and interactions between common tools or objects and creates unexpected relationships between them.
Brad Miller received his B.F.A. in 1990 from the University of California, San Diego, and exhibits his work in California and Washington. He was a runner-up at the American Film Institutes 10th Annual Visions of U.S. Video competition. In 1998 he exhibited two installations at Tacoma Art Commissions Commencement Art Gallery, and has an upcoming exhibition this Summer at King County Arts Commission Gallery in Seattle.
Ongoing since 911's incorporation in 1984, the 911 Windows program continues to offer area artists a unique installation opportunity in five large storefront windows facing a major intersection at 117 Yale Avenue North (one block south of the flagship REI building). Artists interested in applying to the 911 Windows program should contact Brad Thompson at 911 Media Arts Center (206) 682-6552, or e-mail brad@911media.org.
