This special edition of Upgrade! will feature a talk by Juan Pampin about Simultaneity: Entanglement, the current installation at 911 and SOIL gallery. In this exhibit, a hyper-directional sound beam joins the acoustics of the two galleries, allowing participants at both sites to engage in a dance of audible feedback. This collaborative installation is part of the Ultrasonic Sound Beams in Media Arts research project, supported by the Center for Digital Arts and Experimental Media (DXARTS), University of Washington.

We are also proud to introduce John Conomos, a media artist, critic and writer, and Senior Lecturer in film and new media studies at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney, Australia. John will present Chris Marker and New Media, a chapter in his new book Mutant Media.

John Conomos was founding editor of the time-based media arts journal Scan+ and editor, with Brad Buckley, of Republic of Ideas (Artspace/Pluto Press 2001). Conomos’ videotapes and installations have been widely exhibited throughout Australia, Europe, the United States and Latin America. His work received an honourable merit award at Berlin’s Transmediale Videofest’98, and in 2000 he became a recipient of an Australia Council for the Arts New Media Fellowship.
