Tamiko Thiel will talk about her new interactive 3D installation "The
Travels of Mariko Horo" which premieres at the ISEA media
art conference. A reversal of the Marco Polo syndrome, "Mariko
Horo" was inspired by Japanese artists who imagined the
exotic and mysterious West during the 200 years when Japan was
closed to the outside world.
Tamiko Thiel is developing the dramatic and narrative capabilities
of interactive 3D virtual reality as a medium for addressing
social and cultural issues. Past works include the virtual reality
installation Beyond Manzanar, dealing with media scapegoating
of minorities in times of crisis, and Starbright World, an online
virtual playspace for seriously ill children designed with Steven
Spielberg. In 2004 she was a Fellow at the MIT Center for Advanced
Visual Studies to produce "The Travels of Mariko Horo."
